Cheese Snack Bread


For the bread

1 single pkg yeast

1/4 cup warm water

3/4 cup warm milk

2 tbsp shortening

1 tbsp sugar

1 tbsp salt

2 3/4 cup flour

For the topping

2 cups cheese-shredded(use a combination of cheeses)

1 egg-beaten

1/3 cup milk

1 tsp minced onion flakes

Caraway or poppyseeds


For the bread

Dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let stand for 5 minutes.

In a large bowl,place the milk,shortening,sugar,salt,1 1/4 cup flour and the yeast.

Beat until smooth.

Stir in enough of the remaining flour to form a soft dough.

Turn onto a floured surface and knead til smooth and elastic(about 5 minutes).

Place in a greased bowl,turning to coat the top.

Cover and let rise in a warm place,free of drafts,til double in size.

Punch down and pat into a 15x10x1"(or 13x9x2") baking pan.

Cover and let rise til double in size again.

For the topping

Combine the cheese,egg,milk and onion.

Spread evenly over the top of the bread dough after the second rising.

Sprinkle top with caraway or poppyseeds.

Bake at 375 for 20 min til browned.

Cut into squares and serve warm.
