Grandma's Old Fashioned Doughnuts



Ingredients


1 Cup sugar

1 Tbsp. nutmeg

1 Tsp. baking soda

1/2 Tsp. salt

2 eggs

1 Tbsp. shortening

1 Cup sour milk
( add 1 Tbsp. vinegar to 1 C. milk for sour milk)

6 Cups flour

Oil for frying.


Directions


In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, nutmeg, soda, salt, eggs, milk and shortening.

Add enough flour to make a fairly firm but light dough.

Roll out dough on a floured surface and cut with doughnut cutter.

Heat oil to 375 degrees F. and drop doughnuts in, turning several times until they are golden brown.

Drain on soft crumpled paper.

Dust with powdered sugar, or granulated sugar and or with cinnamon/sugar while still warm or let cool and add a glaze.

Repeat with doughnut centers.
