Red Velvet Cake


For the cake

1/2 cup crisco

1 1/2 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

2 oz red food coloring

2 tbsp cocoa powder

1 tsp salt

2 cup cake flour

1 cup buttermilk

1 tbsp vinegar

1 tsp baking soda

For the icing

1 cup milk

1/4 cup flour

pinch of salt

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup crisco

1 tsp vanilla


For the cake

Cream the crisco and sugar.

Add the eggs,vanilla and food coloring.

Sift together the cocoa powder,cake flour,salt and baking soda.

Add sifted ingredients,the buttermilk and vinegar to the creamed crisco and sugar.

Beat throughly til all is combined well.

Pour into greased and floured 13x9x2" or 2 9" round cake pans and bake at 350 for 25-30 min or til test done with a toothpick.

Cool on wire rack.

For the icing

Combine the milk,flour and salt together til smooth and cook over medium heat until thick.

Cool completely.

Cream the crisco and sugar.

Add vanilla.

Gradually add the milk misture and and beat til light and fluffy.

Spread over cooled cake.
