Easy English Toffee


1 c. sugar

1 c. butter (salted or unsalted)
not margerine,oleo or vegetable spread

3 tbsp. water

1 tsp. vanilla

4 or 5 Plain chocolate candy bars - optional

3/4 cup chopped nuts - optional


Combine sugar, butter and water in heavy saucepan.

Cook to 300 degrees (hard crack stage) stirring constantly to prevent burning.

Add vanilla and pour into a buttered 9 x 9 inch pan.

At this stage, if you want a chocolate nut toffee, place the chcolate bars atop the hot mixture and spread evenly as they melt.

Sprinkle nuts on top of melted chocolate.

When completely cooled, break into pieces.
