Floral Onion


1 egg 1 cup milk 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 1/2 tsp salt 1 1/2 tsp ceyenne pepper 1 tsp paprika 1/2 tsp ground black pepper 1/4 tsp dried oregano 1/8 tsp dried thyme 1/8 tsp cumin 1 jumbo sweet onion-peeled oil for deep frying Directions

Mix the beaten egg with the milk in a large bowl. Combine the flour,salt,cayenne pepper,paprika,black pepper,oregano,thyme and cumin in another bowl. Stand the onion on its base and make crisscross cuts from the top almost to the base (or,if you have one of the floral onion cutters,use that). Drop the onion onto the counter from a heighth of 12 inches(this will help to open it up). Soak the onioon in ice water for 30 minutes(this will open it up even more). Separate any "petals" that stick together. Dip the onion in the egg-milk wash.coat liberally with the dry ingredients and repeat process, being sure to get coating between each "petal". Place the onion in the freezer while heating the oil(this helps the coating stick to the onion. Heat enough oil to cover onion in a deep pan or deep fryer to 400. Cook onion for 10 minutes or til golden brown. Drain and serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
